Every city lives two lives and each makes for a very different photograph. Traveling the world and seeing many cities some will always create an immediate and vividly clear, even stereotypical image of what the place looks like. But for many cities this image, often created by TV and Movies is a daytime image with a standard, used-because-this-is-the-city image. And there is nothing wrong with this.
To find the inner beauty of a city, to find its soul one needs to see a city by night for it to be revealed. A night time landscape of any city is shows often shows a very different city to what is seen at night, during the day one can easily tell one city from another but at night it could be anywhere. One can find peace or busyness in a night time landscape, views with the moon create atmosphere while some cities demand attention on a moonless night. Over water a city may reflect on itself creating a spectacular mirror, two cities in one leaving a viewer looking in wonder. Looking down on a city from a higher view point can show the city lights stretching out further than the eye should really be able to see creating an image of lights rather than structures.
Many cities remain busy at night, traffic flows and there is a certain hustle and bustle that deserves to be captured. When asked “so what was New York like?” Or “how was Doha?” a night time longer than average exposure photograph answers the question with ease. A city is a living, breathing and even growing organism and has its seasons and even emotions. A cityscape on a rainy night with some water droplets on the lens can easily tell the story of a night out in the city, one cannot just see the city but when captured well it can be heard, tasted and smelled and that is what makes a photograph a photograph not just a snap.
A city scape is a landscape that is the polar opposite of a natural landscape that may be mountains or a long stretch of beach. A city scape is ones expression of a place visited; it shows a person was more than just an average tourist on some city break vacation. At night the daytime view of the city becomes masked by darkness lit up by street lights and office blocks and these have become some of the most well-known city portraits ever.
Black and White can work at night, it adds a special something to the landscape but adding some colour to the over exposed moving lights creates and amazing work of art that shows the arteries of the city hard at work.
Cityscapes at night are portraits of a city that people will fall in love with.
